I know I drove home from the office visit, but I certainly don’t remember the drive. Before I left the parking lot, I called my boyfriend, Lyle, and gave him the news. He was my cheerleader through all of this. Our circumstances didn’t allow him to be with me often, but he was always just a phone call away. He assured me we were going to get through this and he told me how much he loved me. After that phone call, I knew I had to get all of my kids together, so I sent each of them a text, asking them to be at the house because I needed to talk to them. I remember thinking about what I was going to say, and how I was going to say it, and it all ended up sounding like a spirit crushing speech, and I really didn’t want to do it. Everyone can relate to this in one way or another. It doesn’t have to be cancer, even talking with kids about the death of a loved one can be overwhelming.

Laura was alone when she received the news: She had metastatic vulvar cancer. Having worked in the medical field for more than ten years, she knew the word “metastatic” was not good. The scariest part about the diagnosis, however, was going to be telling her children.
Before Laura did that, she called her boyfriend, Lyle. Then, she texted each of her children and told them she needed to talk to them at home. All she could think about was what she was going to say, and how she was going to say it. How could she share this news without it crushing their spirits?
Cancer also tested Laura’s faith in the Lord, and she found herself wondering, “How can He keep allowing things like this to happen in my life? What am I doing wrong?” To answer that question, she read and reread the book of Job. He didn’t question God when he was in the midst of losing everything. It was in that moment that a peace washed over her, and she was ashamed to even entertain the question of “Why?” Join Laura as she battles a life-changing diagnosis and learns how to confront it with a positive outlook and thankful heart for all of God’s blessings in Surviving the Storm.
Laura L. Torres reveals how her faith helped her navigate challenges and obstacles after being diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. She currently resides in Wisconsin with her very large and loving family. Laura continues to be active with local outreach programs through her church and in her community.
