I remember May 30, 1966, as if it were yesterday. Life changed for all of us that day. I was twelve-years-old and couldn’t wait to go swimming for the first time that summer. Standing at the end of the dock, I looked down the length of it and pictured the dive in my head. Taking a deep breath, I slowly started running down the dock. Those were the last footsteps I’d ever take. And, although, slicing through the surface of the water felt great, when I entered the water everything changed. I went limp. My arms and legs wouldn’t move. Slowly, I floated up face down.
My parents were told that I had a spinal cord injury at the C-3 and C-4 cervical vertebrae in my neck—that I was a quadriplegic, meaning all four of my limbs were paralyzed. As if that weren't frightening enough for them, the doctors also told my parents it would be best if they stayed in the hospital overnight because they didn’t expect me to live.
Questions like "Why can't I move? Why can't I talk?" ran through my mind. I'm not sure why I never asked them. I was a scared twelve-year-old kid lost in this unfamiliar world. All I did know was that I needed strength. I prayed, "God help me!" over and over in the emergency room.

About the Author
Randy Krulish has lived forty-six years in a wheelchair after suffering a broken neck when he was twelve-years-old. The experiences he's had as a quadriplegic allows him to show how family and faith can give hope to others who have also had a life-changing accident.
The darkness and despair leads to light and love for others with God's gifts. Randy now views life with a different set of eyes. This view allows him the opportunity to share with others a life seen by few. From a frightened boy, he has grown into a man filled with hope and compassion.
Randy is a retired educator living in Lyle, Minnesota. He lives a fairly independent lifestyle, in his own apartment, with the help of attendants who come at various times throughout the day.
