Then Is Sowing Really Necessary?
Now, there are two ways to interpret this. The first way suggestsI don’t have to do anything. Because God takes care of the birds, God also will take care of me, regardless of whether I’ve planted seed. Many people, especially in religion, interpret this that way, concluding, “Well, God doesn’t need my money.” And that’s true, God doesn’t need your money. But, the kingdom of God needs your money. The kingdom of God operates on the earth. The kingdom of God preaches the gospel around the world. The gospel is completely free but taking it around the world isn’t. So, the kingdom of God needs your money.
In Mark 10:30, after Peter had said, “Lord, we left everything and followed You. What’s in it for us?” Jesus told him, “No man has left houses, lands, fathers, mothers, or children for the gospel’s sake that he shall not receive a hundredfold in this life and in the life to come.”
One hundredfold! Jesus is back to seedtime and harvest. He’s telling Peter, “Whatever you left, whatever you sowed, whatever you gave so that the gospel could be preached in the kingdom,I’m going to return it to you a hundredfold in this life and in the life to come. I’m going to give you eternal life.”
Looking again at Matthew 6, Jesus is explaining the law of seedtime and harvest – the law of the kingdom. He’s saying to His disciples, “Look at these birds. They don’t sow; they don’t reap. But your heavenly father takes care of them.” The second way to interpret this is to hear what Jesus says next: “Are you not much better than the birds?”
