I could hardly believe my ears. I was listening to a respected pastor, known nationwide for his patriotism and love for the United States. He was being interviewed on national television, and the host asked him specifically if the United States was mentioned in the Bible. His answer?
"The United States of America is not in the Bible."
The host pressed him again, almost amazed himself.
"Do you mean to tell me that the United States, this great nation in history, is not mentioned in the Bible?"
"That's right."
What makes you say that, the host queried further?"
"Because I said so," came the blunt response.
Perhaps it shouldn't be surprising that this leader in Christian ministry had no response for his television interviewer, but it is a problem. This pastor is respected, and commands respect, and yet he maintains that America is not found in the Bible. Did America just get lucky? The implications are staggering.
What do you believe? Where did America come from? How did she become so great? She feeds the world, possesses the bulk of all global wealth, sends missionaries worldwide to preach the gospel, has troops on more than 900 military bases to try and help in global conflicts and disasters. Is this a fluke?
Let's Think This Through
Let's consider for a moment the icon that has become the United States of America. For thousands of years the world existed in much the same way. Wooden, wind-powered ships carried our forefathers to the shores of this great land where they used primitive tools to build their rough-hewn houses. They planted their crops using single-furrow plows, and eked out a living drawn from the land.
However, in a matter of a few generations, things changed. Early American colonists chose to build a nation on a covenant with Almighty God and Jesus Christ. Through this foundation, they created the United States of America. This nation dominated the earth within a matter of a few short centuries. Developments in technology, inventions and innovation have revolutionized life around the world. The United States is the only nation in the world that has put a man upon the moon, twelve of them in fact. She has a higher standard of living than the vast majority of the world and a more stable form of government than every other nation known to man. Books such as "The 5,000 Year Leap" have been written to try and discover the principles that made America great. She has been a leader in law, justice, innovation, morality...the list goes on and on. Has God been looking the other way.
Does God care about nations? Is America on His radar? As my brother Stan asks, did we hit the "lucky nation jackpot," and end up living the good life by coincidence? If we did, then God is not fair, nor just. But that's not His style. Surely He must know who we are.
