On a country farm there was a beautiful willow tree that grew beside a small pond. The willow’s strong roots dug deep into the ground to drink lots of water. Yellow-green leaves grew like feathers on the long branches.
These branches provided shade during the long hot summer days. The branches would sway back and forth creating a rustling sound in the wind.
One day Herman, a country mouse, scampered by and heard Willow crying. “Why are you weeping Willow?” asked Herman.
“Because I’m all alone,” whimpered Willow.
“But what about the people who live here?” asked Herman.
“The children who used to play under my long branches have all moved away,” sighed Willow.
“I will send my children over to play in your tree,” offered Herman.
“Thank you Herman,” said Willow.
“Willow, did you know that your bark is good medicine for fever and pain,” Herman told her as he scampered away.
“I did not know that,” said Willow.
The next day six young mice climbed Willow’s tree trunk. They played hide and seek in her branches.
Running up and down the tree the mice tickled Willow’s spine and made her giggle. Willow liked the mice, but she still missed the laughter of the children.

About the Book
The Weeping Willow is a twenty-four-page picture book for four- to- eight-year-olds that tells the story of a beautiful willow tree that thinks she is all alone. She misses the children playing among her long branches. But through a mouse, owl, and bee she learns that she not only has friends but is valuable in many ways to the environment.
About the Author
In her twilight years Doreen Millichamp began her writing career.
As a story teller and writer, Doreen Millichamp has self-published three books on “The Campfire Boys.” The material those stories came from her family childhood experiences of camping and fishing. “The Weeping Willow” composition came from memories of playful times in a willow tree. Many of her stories and poems were published in anthology, Voices. Other stories have also appeared in several Manitoba newspapers and magazines.
Millichamp was born in Toronto, Ontario but now resides in Winnipeg, Manitoba with her husband. She has two sons.
