Walking the Dog
The small print in my marriage license I did not read because I was too busy saying, “I do” and “I will” and generally the affirmative to everything. Had I read the small print I am sure it would have stated that I must have a chauffeur’s license and be prepared to move out in a minivan at any moment in any direction to take care of household affairs. Even though I did not read the small print, I did gladly accept the responsibilities that are involved in transporting children to dentist, dance lessons, little league, birthday parties and all the numerous trips required in managing a family and running the household. However, there was one transporting responsibility I was not aware of and I was completely unprepared to handle.
“Take the dog to the vet.” That is what Mike told me on the telephone…long distance. He was out of town and in his rush to leave early that morning he forgot to tell me one of his many dogs was sick and had to see the vet.
From my perspective Mike’s occupation as a sales rep for the state of Georgia made it possible for him to have a dog in every town in Georgia. Having all these dogs strategically located in north, middle and south Georgia made it convenient for him to go hunting with a client when he was in that area. With so many dogs to care for I was not very sympathetic when one became ill.
“You can use my truck,” as if that was on the top of my list of things that I always wanted to do and a trip to the Bahamas came next.
“Simply put a rope through the collar, take her out of the pen and tie her in the bed of the truck,” he said.
Much to my aggravation, I knew I had to take care of the matter, so I found the rope and went to the dog pens. It was then that I realized that with so many dogs in the pens I had no idea which of the six pointer bird dogs was Nell, the sick dog.
The dogs were all excited, of course, so I finally decided the dog that barked the weakest, jumped the lowest and ran the slowest had to be sick…so I took her.

Martha Cahoon graduated from the University of Georgia with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education and has been an educator and speaker most of her adult life. She is a Bible teacher and inspirational and motivational speaker. Her passion, other than teaching, is counceling and motivating audiances to become all that God has designed for them.
Martha has written articles for Christian magazines, Christian publications, and manuals for discipleship. Her last book is entitiled ‘Why Wear Those Hoochie Mama Dresses’ dealing with fashion flagrance in our culture today.
‘Living With a Sportsman and Other Wild Things’ is again an example of Martha’s humor in writing about serious topics. This book is a thirty day devotion reliving stories about her husband’s humorous hunting and fishing experiences and her crazy life stories involving marriage, children and life.
