Many of you will be tempted to turn me off right now. Many of you will think of all the verses you think tell you to fight the devil doing warfare. Please look with me, and I believe you will see the truth quite differently. My friends, Satan is defeated because Jesus defeated him once and for all at the Cross! He has no power over the believer! We are not trying to get to the light, nor are we trying to escape the darkness. Darkness is merely the absence of light. Light always drives out darkness. The two cannot coexist. We have already been transferred out of the domain of darkness and into the kingdom of His Son, which is full of light and goodness.
How important it is that we understand who we are in Christ! A Christian can get to a place within his or her walk with God where Satan can never touch him. We must, however, submit ourselves completely to God. However, many times, people would rather have a big ritual. We want a pastor to come and bless the house. We want him to anoint all the doors with oil or say some special prayer. The truth is that we don’t need any rituals. If you are a Christian, you are free from Satan. Submit yourselves to God and His word, and watch how you instantly walk free of demonic influence. We will get to the particulars of how that works later in this book. I want to see all believers understand the peace they can have by ending the constant warfare with Satan and resting in God’s goodness and the provision Christ purchased on the Cross. We must deal with Satan via the attitude and understanding that he is a defeated foe and has no power over our lives. If we ignore him, we can be deceived. If we give him too much credit, we can also be deceived.
Please understand that Satan and his demons are real. He is called the serpent, the devil, the prince of the power of the age, the god of this world, the dragon, and many other evil names. The word “Satan” in the Old Testament means accuser. His name in the New Testament is very similar and means slanderer. He has always been and will always be a slanderer. Slandering and accusing are his two main actions against believers. He loves to remind us of our sin. He loves to make us believe that we are worthless, unlovable, guilty, and shameful by using the law against us. Under the Old Covenant, believers were required to be in obedience to the law to be accepted by God. If they stumbled at any time, the law made them guilty. Because of their guilt, Satan would come and accuse them. Satan would constantly go to God and say, “You have to kill this one! You have to let me have this one! He is in sin!” But under the New Covenant, believing in Christ and His finished work at the Cross is what makes us righteous, so righteousness is not based upon following the law. If we break the law as a Christian, we are still righteous through faith in Jesus Christ. Jesus fulfilled the law for us, but Satan loves to operate as if we are still under the law. Remember, he can no longer go before God with our sins, but he sure loves to bring our sins to our minds on a regular basis. Satan’s devices are guilt and condemnation: his main weapons against us.
