If life challenges are a treasure, why do very few people desire it? Why isn’t everyone searching for it? When I think of treasure, I think of diamonds, mansions, lots of money, etc. I would not naturally say that life challenges, such as grief, are a treasure, especially since so much pain is involved and it takes so long to complete the learning process. In fact, the only thing that keeps me from becoming bitter is that I understand the value of it. I hate the pain, but I have to accept that in order to experience the future blessings. It is all about how I view the situation.
I don’t know about you, but the last time I went to Wal-Mart, I did not see the following items anywhere on the shelf: God’s love being shown more evident than before, certain Bible verses with special meaning, urgency to keep living life in spite of the pain because life is short, unexpected “God” conversations and opportunities, and so much more. These are the intangibles in life that cannot be purchased anywhere in the world.
I would even have to go so far as to say that life challenges are actually one of life’s “best kept secrets”, if you change your perspective and learn to respond wisely to it. Don’t get me wrong. I do not always want to enjoy a healthy dose of this wonderful secret, and if I could experience these benefits another way, I would gladly do so. But at the end of the day, it makes me a better person. And that is what life is all about.
Here are a few treasures I have found as a result of my grief throughout the years:
Growth opportunity like none other, and the things I learn are not for sale
Reminds me that the most important things in life are God, my family, and growth opportunities
I am determined to run to Jesus step-by-step
Even though I am grieving, the clock is still ticking, and that is why I keep living purposefully
Focus my time and energy on the things that matter and do not waste time or opportunities

What counts in life is not what happens to us, but how we respond to it. Author Kelli Horn became acquainted with adversity after the loss of her father, sister, and two boyfriends. She has embraced them as learning opportunities, as she lives purposefully for God, family, professional growth, and in health/fitness. Furthermore, she has obtained a degree in health information technology and the (RHIT) Registered Health Information Technologist, (CCS) Certified Coding Specialist, and the AHIMA-approved ICD-10-CM/PCS Trainer national credentials during a major life storm.

About the Author
Kelli Horn is the Coding Education Manager at Ardent Health Services and an Adjunct Coding Instructor at Tulsa Community College. She has been a speaker at the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) Clinical Coding meeting in Louisiana and their national convention in California. In addition, she has spoken about leadership at the Oklahoma Health Information Management Association (OKHIMA), where she currently serves as the Communications Coordinator. She has instructed CCS Exam Review workshops for Oklahoma, Arkansas, and New York, and Coding Clinic Update and ICD-10-CM/PCS workshops for Oklahoma. She has also published articles regarding coding and leadership for the Journal of AHIMA and AHIMA Code Write, and has been interviewed for AHIMA’s Advantage publication. Finally, she has been a guest speaker and/or piano performer at women’s groups, civic organizations, community colleges, and grief groups, and a Miss Oklahoma preliminary pageant system.
