LIFE CHANGED
My Dad died when I was five years old. It was a sad time. I thought that this was going to be the worst time of my life. Everyone at school was nice to my brother, Justin, and I.
My Mom, Leah, was sad. She used to smile a lot, but her smile was different now. I could tell she tried her best not to cry. She wanted us to be happy. I stopped taking violin lessons, as well as dance lessons. I guess the music was gone, and as expected we did not have enough money. We did not go out anymore. I guess I did not know much about life at that age. Life was slow. It changed a lot. I tried to be the same happy girl in spite of everything.
Our closest friends were around, but for some reason I knew that my Mom and my brother were my true friends. I guess that is why we call our parents and siblings, our family.
We lived in a house that we called our Little House. It had three bedrooms; One for my parents, I shared a bedroom with my brother, and the third bedroom was for my Uncle Phil. He was living with us while he was going to college.
The night after my dad’s funeral we went to bed. The bedroom seemed bigger. It was not scary. It was just different. It had lost something. My plan was to go to sleep, then to wake up in the middle of the night and move to my mother’s bedroom. The idea was to sleep with my Mom. I fell asleep. When I woke up my brother was not with me. He had walked out of our bedroom.
When I went to my Mom’s bedroom, I realized Justin had the same plan. He was sleeping with our Mom, Leah. I joined them. For six months we slept on the same bed. Mom was working harder than before, so I guess she was too tired to mind. I enjoyed sleeping together. The problem was that we were not sleeping well after awhile. I kept bumping heads with my brother. My Mom tried many times to stay with us in our bedroom, but we always ended moving to hers.
We had a family conversation. Mom proposed moving to another house. For some reason it sounded like a great idea. We decided to go see houses. We went everywhere, but the prices were too high. I remember a Realtor in one of the model homes telling my Mom that there was a right time to do things in life. He told us that it was probably not the right time for us.
