(Chapter Ten: Darkness Falling Page 2) Evangeline kept her head tucked low as the snow attempted to blow into her face. Michal galloped as best he could through the snow along the road to the village, but she could feel it was becoming more difficult. The darkness enshrouding them caused her mind to see shadows in the trees and Evangeline wondered if perhaps she had been a bit hasty in her persistence. She lowered herself to Michal’s neck and took a deep breath. “Take it easy my darling,” she whispered, and they continued forward. Evangeline felt an unsettling familiarity as the darkness moved in around them. It reminded her far too much of her nightmares and she clung tightly to Michal's mane. Then suddenly, there was a loud crack, causing Michal to rear with a neigh of fright! Evangeline turned toward the sound, but she was suddenly knocked from Michal's back as a crash echoed through the darkness around them. She landed on the frozen ground with a painful thud, feeling something break inside her body. She moaned and forced herself to raise her neck only to see that a tree had come crashing down upon Michal and he was lying on the ground. “No!” she screamed as she dragged her body toward him. Pain tore through her and her left arm felt motionless as she crawled through the snow. Her beloved horse was pinned beneath the tree, whinnying in anguish. Evangeline ignored her pain as she attempted to push the tree off Michal, but it was in vain. The heavy limb would not move by her mere strength. She heard footsteps and turned, seeing a shadow approaching her through the falling snow. Darkness enshrouding the figure just as her nightmares had done. Fear rose within her throat, but Evangeline protectively placed her broken body between the shadow and her horse. Using her good arm, she pulled the revolver from behind her and aimed it directly at the approaching figure. “I… do not… believe in ghosts. But… I do believe… in bullets…” The shot rang out in the night like the echoing strike of thunder.
